Eva Lee on synths, style and the beauty of a good pair of boots
Some songs tell complicated stories. Others celebrate something wonderfully simple. For Latex Angels' Thigh High, the mission is clear: celebrate the boots, turn up the volume and stop worrying so much about what other people think.
We caught up with keyboardist Eva Lee to talk about the making of the track, her musical partnership with guitarist Elvira, and why she believes the world could use a little less boring fashion.
Not the songwriter, just the woman behind the keys
First things first: Eva is quick to correct one possible misunderstanding about Thigh High.
“Hold on! I'm not the one who wrote the lyrics. For that, you'll really have to talk to Maud,” she laughs. “I was responsible for the keys and the accompanying melodies. But yes, it's pretty obvious what the song is about!”
While Maud had a clear musical direction in mind, Eva helped shape the track's distinctive sound. The idea was to create something upbeat and energetic without losing the unmistakable Latex Angels identity.
“Maud already had a musical idea and direction in her head. She wanted something more cheerful and uptempo to celebrate thigh-high boots, without losing too much of the Latex Angels sound.”
Eva brought in poppy melodies, funky elements and synth effects, carefully balancing them against the band's guitars and drums.
“I didn't want to turn it into a full-blast rave song. I left room for the drums and guitar, and I made the keys work together with the guitar in several places.”
Finding the right balance
One of Eva's favourite aspects of Thigh High is the interplay between her synthesizers and Elvira's guitar work.
“Sometimes my synth lines sit just behind the guitar riff, almost in its shadow. In other places, my synths overpower the guitar a little, or we combine both sounds into a nice mix.”
That musical relationship developed naturally during the creative process. Although Maud generally leads the band's overall creative direction, Elvira often supports her in developing ideas. For Thigh High, it quickly became clear that the keyboards would play a particularly important role.
“Elvira and I worked together on quite a few ideas. When she had part of a riff, I'd quickly come up with something on the keys to fill out the rest, or the other way around.”
The result is a track in which the keyboards and guitar complement each other, sometimes taking turns in the spotlight and sometimes blending into one energetic whole.
Who said it has to be dark?
Latex Angels are known for their bold aesthetic and their exploration of fetish and kink, but Eva sees no reason why every song in that world needs to be dark, aggressive or dominant.
“What I particularly like is that it's light-hearted and feels more like an anthem. Not everything involving fetish and kink has to be dark, mean or dominant. This is simply a tribute to a beautiful piece of clothing.”
And when it comes to the lyrics, Eva isn't particularly interested in debating whether the song is humorous or over the top.
“What joke? Who doesn't love a beautiful pair of thigh-high boots? Don't even try to deny it!”
It's a typically Eva response: direct, playful and completely unapologetic about what she likes.
Dress the part
For Eva, the fun doesn't stop when the music ends. She hopes the song inspires people to express themselves through their clothing, even if their style happens to be a little more daring than the norm.
At a Latex Angels show, she expects fans to arrive dressed in their best latex outfits — and, naturally, she has a suggestion for the footwear.
“We always expect our fans to wear their best latex outfits, and a pair of thigh-high boots really belongs with that. Then the party can truly begin!”
It's all part of the experience: the music, the atmosphere and a crowd of people who aren't afraid to embrace the band's distinctive world.
Less boring. More boots.
When asked what she hopes listeners will take away from Thigh High, Eva doesn't overcomplicate the answer.
“I hope people will dress a little less boringly. Do something crazy and put on those beautiful high boots. If people think that's vulgar… so what!”
It's a simple message, delivered with the same confidence and humour that run through the song itself. You don't need a grand philosophy to enjoy something you love, and you certainly don't need everyone's approval.
For Eva, Thigh High is a reminder that music can be fun, fashion can be expressive, and sometimes the best thing you can do is stop worrying about other people's opinions.
So pull those boots on, turn up the music and own your style.
After all, as Eva would probably tell you herself: who doesn't love a good pair of thigh-high boots?
